Grammys 2024: The Domination of Phoebo

Another Grammys has taken place, but just two years ago on February 4th, the music ceremony offered some surprises AND amazing photos of Hollywood's newest power couple: Bo Burnham and Phoebe Bridgers!

Along with her boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, Phoebe racked up three Grammys. Plus she won another with SZA!

Those four wins were the most for ANY artist in 2024 (even her good friend Taylor Swift was beat in terms of quantity!), and Bo was there to celebrate her success at parties, the ceremony itself, and even an afterparty.

Let’s take a look back at the last public appearance of Bo and how the famously secretive comedian came out to support Phoebe on the biggest night of her career.

The Nominations

This particular Grammy season had nods for BOTH Phoebe and Bo.

While Phoebe was up for six awards (Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Song of the Year, and Best Record of the Year, and Best Album of the Year) with boygenius and one award (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance) for her collaboration with SZA , Bo (along with Daniel Calderwood) was nominated for Inside Deluxe.

Since both members of Phoebo were acknowledged by the industry, fans were speculating if Bo would FINALLY show up for a Grammy ceremony. Obviously Phoebe would show up, but it’s always a guess as to whether Bo will attend a red carpet event.

He famously avoided the whole thing when he won a Grammy for “All Eyes on Me” in 2022 (and had Levar Burton accepting for him and quipping “Bo’s not here, y’all”).

There’s also a running theory among Bo fans that if he DOES show up to the ceremony, he loses the award(s) he was nominated for. This meme sums it up well, and it DOES seem to be true for Inside!

Emmys: Wins 3 when doesn’t attend, loses 3 when he does

Peabody: Wins and does not attend

Grammys: Wins 1 and does not attend

So a major part of being a fan of Bo is that you want to see him dressed up and attending awards ceremonies, BUT you also don’t want him to lose. Such a conundrum!

However prior to the ceremony and the will he/won’t he appear in public, there were the major events that surround award season. Let’s take a look at one in particular.

The Parties prior to the Grammys

One of the largest components prior to the Grammys themselves are the parties where the elite of Hollywood rubs elbows with the music industry.

For one particular event, Phoebo appeared in all black suits with dark sunglasses (very chic).

Since any appearance of Bo is scrutinized by the fandom, this particular ensemble was deemed very handsome (although it’s odd that his Support Palestine flower appears and disappears depending on the photo). And Phoebo are holding hands…too cute!

And they both attended another one of the big parties of the week: the GQ event.

Phoebe looked glamorous in a black lace dress while Bo…put on a white shirt and gray pants. This type of party is SO not his scene, and it’s nice that he went to support Phoebe and the rest of boygenius on their big night.

I also spotted Bo hiding in the background of this pic of Phoebe and Katie Gavin. So nice to see him smile again!

These photos were a good clue that Bo WOULD be showing up for a ceremony he eschewed two years before.

The Big Day

Grammys 2024 had arrived, and all of the fandom were speculating if Bo would appear on the red carpet.

Ever since his success with Eighth Grade that forced him to play the media game along with Elsie Fisher, Bo had not really done the standard red carpet. Except for his beautiful blue velvet suit for the Emmys in 2021 and his bizarre ski mask look to support Jerrod Carmichael’s win in 2022, of course.

Well, to no one’s surprise, Bo did not attend the red carpet with Phoebe, probably to make sure the focus was on her and not him (since he is so elusive).

Fans were not, however, left with only small glimpses of him at the ceremony as with other awards. Bo was actually present throughout, smiling and appearing to have a good time!

And this picture with boygenius was so fantastic. Bo was in all black, once again, while Phoebe, Lucy, and Julian wore matching creamy white suits with black ties. Love the pink flowers in their lapels!

Bo was also seen during the telecast clapping for Billie Eilish and her brother (and serious Bo doppelgänger) Finneas.

All in all, he genuinely seemed thrilled to be a part of Phoebe’s big night. While Bo unfortunately lost his Grammy to a box set about birds (The Birdsong Project), Phoebe racked up four big wins!

And the biggest surprise of them all? Bo and Taylor Swift!

After writing about Bo’s weird love-hate relationship with Taylor, I never thought I would see the day the two would be in the same room, let alone photographed together. The power of Phoebe, I suppose!

So that was the magical night of Phoebo. Since then, fans have only seen a photo of Bo’s shoulder next to Phoebe at a concert.

But we did have that one special Grammys where Bo actually appeared!
